NRC Shares PWR! Moves at the Virginia Parkinson's Conference

We recently had the privilege of presenting an impromptu session at the Virginia Parkinson's Conference, where we introduced PWR! Moves—a cutting-edge exercise program specifically designed for people with Parkinson’s Disease. It was a great opportunity to engage with the Parkinson’s community and share how PWR! Moves differs from more traditional therapies, like the LSVT BIG program.

PWR! Moves vs. Traditional LSVT BIG

While LSVT BIG is widely known for helping people with Parkinson’s with large-amplitude movements, it’s a highly structured protocol that can sometimes feel rigid. The LSVT protocol requires multiple days a week of therapy with strict adherence to the LSVT protocol. This rigidity can be a challenge because the program isn’t flexible enough to address individual goals or adapt as the patient's needs change. For example, if a patient struggles with a specific task, like getting in and out of a car, the LSVT protocol doesn't easily accommodate this personalized focus.

In contrast, PWR! Moves—short for Parkinson's Wellness Recovery—offers a more flexible approach. PWR allows therapists to modify exercises to fit each individual’s needs, making it easier to tailor the therapy to specific goals. Whether it's improving balance, getting on/off the floor, or getting in/out of bed, or simply enhancing overall mobility, the PWR! program is adaptable.

The Importance of BIG & FAST Moves

During our presentation, we emphasized the importance of incorporating BIG and FAST movements into exercise routines. In Parkinson’s Disease, one of the primary symptoms is bradykinesia, or slow movement, which can significantly impact daily activities. By focusing on large, fast movements, individuals can help counter this symptom.

Why are BIG moves important? BIG movements—such as stretching your arms out as wide as possible or performing large, exaggerated steps—can help improve range of motion and posture. These large-amplitude movements are critical in combating the smaller, restricted movements that are common with Parkinson's. Exercises that incorporate these motions help to retrain the brain and body to move with more confidence and coordination.

Why are FAST/High-Amplitude moves essential? FAST/High-Amplitude movements are just as crucial because they break the pattern of slow, bradykinetic movements that are also common with Parkinson’s. Incorporating fast, dynamic exercises into your routine can help restore speed and agility. Additionally, there is increasing evidence that high-intensity, fast-paced exercises have neuroprotective benefits, potentially slowing the progression of Parkinson’s symptoms and even improving cognition over time.

Key Takeaways from the Session

  1. Flexibility is Key: Unlike LSVT, PWR! Moves allows for modifications, making it more suitable for addressing individual needs and goals.

  2. BIG Movements Matter: Large-amplitude exercises are essential in helping Parkinson’s patients break free from restricted movement patterns and improve mobility.

  3. FAST Moves Are Critical: Fast, high-intensity movements not only combat bradykinesia but also offer neuroprotective benefits that can help with both physical and cognitive health.

  4. Adaptability in Exercise: PWR! Moves can be done seated, standing, or even lying down, offering versatility that makes it accessible to a wide range of abilities.
